European Fashion Photographer Makes U.S. Debut in Miami

MIAMI—For the first time, American audiences will have the opportunity to admire the distinctive large format and Polaroid works of acclaimed European fashion and art photographer Marc Lagrange. Based in Antwerp, Belgium, Lagrange’s photographs have been featured for the past 20 years in leading European fashion magazines and a series of collectors edition monographs.

“Ever since the 1980s, the decade in which Lagrange dedicated himself for good to photography, he has created intriguing portraits and nudes of his muses, femmes fatales full of secrets and fantasies, with an underlying decadent impulse,” observes Arseny Vesnin, chief editor of Designcollector, and a leading European critic.

The preview reception will be held on Friday, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. with a gala opening planned for Saturday, Nov. 10 at LMNT Arts Gallery, 59 NW 36th Street in Miami’s Midtown district. For directions and more information, go to LMNTArtsMiami.com.

“We’re very pleased to have the first opportunity to showcase Marc’s work in the United States,” explained Vincent Harrison, co-founder of NAC Gallery, which is mounting the show at LMNT. “Marc has an amazing ability to create images that provoke and captivate the viewer, and I definitely believe American audiences are ready to celebrate and collect his works. Many of the photographs he’ll be exhibiting have never been seen before.”

ABOUT MARC LAGRANGE

Evocative, sensual and voluptuous, Marc Lagrange’s work celebrates beauty and pleasure. The Antwerp-based photographer, who has a predilection for nudes and portraits, creates luxurious and timeless environments, where eroticism and intimacy play a central part. The chemistry Lagrange has with his models sets him apart from other photographers. He gets them to reveal parts of themselves in a trusting climate, envisaging the shoot as the ultimate performance act. Losing their inhibitions in front of the camera, his models turn into characters, echoing Lagrange’s cinematic references. Although they bare it all, his women retain their sense of mystery and elusive charm, making them even more attractive.

Harshness and shock are absent from his world. Lagrange favors seduction instead of sex. Hedonistic and privileged, his images do not deal with ordinary settings or regular situations. They focus on dreams and fantasies, escaping logic and the constraints of reality. His eye for detail, which is apparent within intricate compositions, underlines a perfectionist streak, served by his use of technique. Famous for shooting with large Polaroids, the Belgian photographer loves textures and a suggestive feel, moving away from the sharp and clinical edge of fashionable photography. Emphasizing shapes and curves, Lagrange places bodies at the center of his artistic research, looking for exciting angles and new perspectives.

Designing his own sets and getting the right props is something Lagrange is passionate about. The same applies to his locations, which he carefully researches until they fit his requirements. He will often spend days looking for a specific piece of furniture or the type of cutlery he wants laid out on a table. His banquet scenes, which are striking and festive at the same time, illustrate his ability to enhance precision while creating the right mood. Pictures happen in his mind first. Lagrange does not do preliminary sketches, even though the occasional mood board may materialize at some stage. The richness of his imagination is enough to keep him going.

Lagrange’s work has been praised by critics and collected worldwide. He has recently showcased his photographs through solo exhibitions, from Galerie Paul Janssen in Grimaud to a retrospective at Young Gallery in Brussels. His “Extra Large Marc Lagrange” show took place in Graz this year, occupying 3000 square meters. In 2011, “Maison Lagrange” introduced more than 240 artworks to the public, many of them unseen. The retrospective lasted half a year. In November, he will unveil selected images in Miami for the first time. Several books have been published under his name, including Polarized by Ludion in 2009, Marc Lagrange 20 by Lido (2011) and XXML The Book, which came out in July this year. Lagrange also directed a commercial video for clothing brand Supertrash, promoting the launch of their latest fragrance.

Miami–His Excellency Nikola Gruevski, Prime Minister of the Republic of Macedonia, will address South Florida business leaders at a forum presented by the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce, on Friday, August 31. The forum, “Macedonia: Land of European Opportunities” will be held at the Hilton Miami Downtown, 1601 Biscayne Blvd.

Macedonia, a former Yugoslav Republic located in Eastern Europe north of Greece, was recently ranked as the “Sixth Best Place in the World to Start a Business” by INC magazine and is considered one of the most trendy and sophisticated markets on the continent. Pro-business initiatives by the Gruevski government have promoted strong growth and trade relationships with the country’s neighbors.

Prime Minister Gruevski will be joined by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Investments Bill Pavlevski, Ambassador to the U.S. Zoran Jolevski and Viktor Mizo, CEO of the Free Trades Authority. Key target markets for greater trade and investment include: Import/Export, Finance and Real Estate Development, Hospitality and Tourism, Biotechnology and Pharmaceuticals, Manufacturing and Food Processing.

“Just as South Florida has become a trade gateway for Latin America, Macedonia has become a gateway to the emerging economies in Eastern Europe,” explained Dana Klein, Honorary Consul General for the Republic of Macedonia and coordinator for the Prime Minister’s visit to Miami. “Stronger trade relations will open Latin American markets up to goods from Macedonia and Eastern Europe, while creating new markets for South Florida and Latin American companies in Europe.”

The forum is co-sponsored by the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce, Embassy of the Republic of Macedonia in the United States and Invest Macedonia.

Local Broadband Provider Ceases Service, NFBA Committed to Assisting Transition

LAKE CITY, FLA–On Wednesday, August 1, North Florida Broadband Authority (NFBA) was informed one of the authority’s retail providers, Main Street Broadband, would immediately cease service to their 80,000 customers in Georgia and Florida.

In April 2012, Mains Street Broadband partnered with NFBA as a “last mile” provider of high-speed wireless internet service to customers residing in the 15-county NFBA region.  The NFBA network went live in June, providing affordable high-speed service for the first time to area residents, businesses, hospitals and schools.

While the vast majority of Main Street Broadband’s customers reside outside the NFBA’s service footprint, NFBA will assist with the transition of local customers to another provider. Because Main Street Broadband’s equipment is not compatible with other last mile providers on the network, NFBA staff are working to quickly facilitate, if possible, that transition of service.

“We were disappointed by the news,” NFBA Chairman Tommy Langford said of Main Street Broadband’s sudden closing, “however, this is not a reflection on NFBA or our network. It’s unfortunate their business model was not successful in the North Florida market and the other areas they served.  We have no specific knowledge about their financial operations, as they were our customer and that was the extent of our relationship.”

Added NFBA General Manager Richelle Sucara, “NFBA is committed to getting service restored to Main Street customers in our service area and is working to transition all affected customers to new service providers to the extent possible. NFBA is a wholesaler of high-speed broadband and does not provide direct service to the residential community.”

Impacted Main Street Broadband customers should contact Last Mile Wifi, 386-243-4164, www.LastMileWiFi.com, or Suwannee Valley Internet Corporation (SVIC) in the Dixie, Levy and Gilchrist tri-county area, 352-490-5433, www.SVIC.net.

Both organizations have started to increase equipment and capacity to aid in the transition from Main Street Broadband Service.

Main Street Broadband customers within the NFBA service area can also get more information at www.NFBA.net.

MIAMI—For abstract expressionist painter Diego Jacobson, every brushstroke is painful, but that didn’t stop the Miami resident from conquering dystonia, a crippling neurological disorder, to become one of the most celebrated Latino artists of his generation.

ARTNews editor Ann Landi calls Jacobson “a painter who’s eager to move on to something new, to explore every possibility at his disposal…(with) a stream of creative energies that shows no sign of stopping.”

Jacobson’s works have been exhibited around the world, including leading Manhattan galleries and international shows in galleries and museums in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Italy, Spain, Argentina, Peru and the Dominican Republic. His works routinely sell for $10,000-50,000 each.

For the first time, Jacobson’s works will be featured in a major retrospective show opening Saturday, September 8 at 7 p.m. at LMNT Arts gallery, 59 NW 36th Street in Miami’s Midtown District. For directions and more information, go to LMNTArtsMiami.com.

“Diego’s works have been difficult to categorize, but that’s the intangible quality that make him such an exciting artist,” explained Vincent Harrison, co-founder of NAC Gallery, which is mounting the show at LMNT. “Throughout his life, he has struggled to pursue his art and this passion is evident in the works we’ll be featuring at the exhibition.

Jacobson Artwork

Diego Jacobson
Painter Diego Jacobson was born in Argentina and raised in Puerto Rico and New York. At the age of eight, Diego Jacobson decided to give up drawing. He had dabbled in drawing and a little painting, and concluded he just wasn’t any good. Around this same time, the earliest signs of generalized dystonia began to creep into his body. By the age of 13, he was in a wheelchair and a candidate for invasive brain surgery. Today, Jacobson’s paintings have been shown on multiple continents and have impressed critics around the world.

The cryosurgery he went through at 13 drastically improved his symptoms. “I’m extremely lucky,” he says. “It took care of the dystonia about 90 percent.” He refuses to let the residual symptoms limit him, though some days are better than others. “I’m still affected, still have spasms and have a tremor. I can’t write, but I can type. Sometimes it hurts to paint. It could be a lot worse.”

He didn’t begin painting until he was in his thirties. A decade later, he has amassed a collection of 1,100 works and more than 25 solo exhibits. Drawing largely from the style of abstract expressionism, Jacobson approaches each painting as an exploration. “I like to apply paint in what I can only describe as a random fashion,” he explains, “always keeping a sense of balance on the canvas, and mixing colors in a nice way. Mostly, I like to cooperate with the paint and see what appears.”

After building a clothing manufacturing business, completing a Masters degree in Practical Spirituality at the Peace Theological Seminary & College of Philosophy in California, and traveling the world, Jacobson discovered the artwork of former Beatle Paul McCartney. McCartney’s work moved him and inspired him to put paint to canvas.
